Tis the season for planning your summer getaway, but where do you begin? The good news is so many major hotel brands compete to be considered the most family-friendly option. The sobering news is that if you have multiple little ones (ages 0-3), like I do, you really need a kitchen and a second bedroom for your kids (not a pull-out couch in the living room), which will also maintain your sanity during the trip. I could survive without a kitchen and eat all meals out with my 1 and 2 year old on a quick three-day getaway, but not for longer trips. With that said, I am always on the lookout for hotels and alternative accomodations for my family, knowing that as they get older our needs will continue to change.
As part of my Summer Series, check these out three vacation options great for families from California to Cape Cod:
Sandestin Destin Condos, South Walton, FL
If you want to be in a bustling family-friendly environment and don’t need to be directly on top of the beach, the Destin condo rentals at Sandestin Golf & Beach Resort are a great option. Enjoy two- and three-bedroom condos with kitchens and balconies, town homes and larger luxury homes in the Village of Baytowne Wharf. Amenities within walking distance include pools, family fun-zones, shopping, dining, street performers and live entertainment. Take a tram to access the beach and the resort’s other amenities like the tennis center. For a great beachfront condo with kitchens and balconies book a room in the Westwinds (the above-mentioned Village is a tram ride away), which is a family-friendly high-rise on the snow-white dunes of the Gulf beach.
Montage Laguna Beach Hotel, Laguna Beach, CA
If you want a laid-back luxury beach resort with the option to book a suite equipped with a kitchen, Montage Laguna Beach is your answer. Book the following: Founder’s Suite, Catalina Suite, Villa La Riviera, or Villa Du Couchant. Their kids programs are divided by age group, from 2-5 (Paintbox Petite) and 5-12 (Paintbox) and 11-16 (M-teens). The hotel is perched on a bluff surrounded by the ocean and features a spa, three restaurants, and two pools.
Wequasset Resort & Golf Club, Cape Cod, MA
On the elbow of Cape Cod, the luxury resort is great for families who have children ages 2-12 because of their stellar kids program and children’s center. There are no kitchens but a lot of food options and amenities to cater to children above 2 years old. There are 120 guest rooms and suites, four restaurants, two pools, two beaches, boating and water sports, four Har Tru tennis courts and an 18-hole championship golf course.
